In this regard, the SAHRC has approached the Equality Court in Tiyani to ventilate the matter as it relates to tribalism, which matter will now be heard on the 3rd of December 2020 in the Equality Court in Tiyani, Limpopo. The SAHRC is supported by the Chairperson of CONTRALESA in the Limpopo Province in its application to court.
The fragile nature of ethnic and tribal relations and social cohesion in South Africa and specifically within the Limpopo Province, frequently dominates media reports. The SAHRC is of the view that it is harmful to our democracy should deliberately hurtful and constitutionally delinquent utterances such as these not be rebuked, as it may fuel further tribalistic tensions within the country. There is a great need to promote unity in diversity and to respect the rule of law and to promote Human Rights values as enshrined in our Constitution which is the supreme law of the Republic.
