The purpose of the visit is to assess the treatment of persons deprived of their liberty in the province and to conduct engagements with government departments on the civil rights of persons in the province. This is in line with the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (OPCAT) and the establishment of the National Preventive Mechanism (NPM).
As part of this visit in the province, on 04 March 2021, the Commissioner will convene a meeting with the Gauteng MEC for Social Development, Ms Morakane Mosupyoe. During the course of the visit, the Commissioner, will also be inspecting a number of places of deprivation of liberty (detention) such as police stations and correctional centres with the view of assessing the treatment of those deprived of their liberty in the province.
