Media Release: SAHRC Limpopo Provincial Office to conduct a fact finding visit at Mbilwi Secondary School in the Vhembe District Municipality

14 April 2021
Attention: Editors and Reporters

The SAHRC Limpopo Provincial Office will conduct a fact finding visit as part of its monitoring mandate at Mbilwi Secondary School in the Vhembe District Municipality, after it was reported that a learner from said school has met her untimely death post the bullying acts by a fellow learner. The visit will take place today, the 14th of April 2021.

The Commission underscores the importance of section 28 of the Constitution which determines that the best interests of children are considered paramount in all matters considering them. The Commission also recognises that the Children’s Act 38 of 2005 includes bullying as a form of child abuse.

The endeavoured visit is therefore aimed at gathering more information on the tragic events which occurred within this community, and to raise increased awareness on the importance of children’s rights.
