SAHRC to launch Water and Sanitation Report

04 March 2014

ATTENTION: Editors and Reporters

The South African Human Rights Commission will be launching the Water and Sanitation report on 11th March in Cape Town.

Access to Water and Sanitation is a universal right. The SAHRC as mandated by the Constitution to promote respect and protection for human rights, and monitor the observance of human rights in the country, has been investigating access to these rights by hosting provincial water and sanitation hearings across the country last year.

The report emanates from these provincial hearings on the right to water and sanitation which were conducted in rural and impoverished areas across the nine provinces of South Africa.

Through these hearings, government departments were tasked and requested to respond to questions on action being taken to address water and sanitation delivery backlogs, including problems with infrastructure.

The launch of the report will reveal all findings and recommendations compiled, and will cross-cut a number of government departments and provide recommendations to these departments on improving the right to access water and sanitation.

The launch will be held as follows:

DATE:Tuesday, 11 March 2014

VENUE: St Georges Cathedral, Cape Town
TIME: 09:00 – 15:00

MEDIA IS INVITED TO ATTEND!

The Deputy-Chairperson of the SA Human Rights Commission, Dr Pregs Govender, will present the report to the media after presenting it to Parliament on the same day.
