Media Advisory: SAHRC Northern Cape Provincial Office to Host an Information Sharing Session and Outreach to Address Xenophobia

21 June 2021
Attention: Editors and Reporters

The South African Human Rights Commission (“the Commission or the SAHRC”) was recently invited to a community meeting to address random xenophobic attacks that were meted out to foreign shop owners in the Louisvale Road communiy situated in the Dawid Kruiper Local Municipality, Upington.

During the meeting the Commission learned, with grave concerns, from the local residents and local business forum that their anger and frustrations stems from the fact that there is a lack of job opportunities and support to local small business owners from the government. The Commission has since decided to intervene by hosting an information sharing session and an outreach where key institutions such as the Department of Employment and Labour, the National Development Agency, the National Lotteries Commission, the National Youth Development Agency, the Small Enterprise Development Agency, the Small Enterprise Finance Agency and the UNHCR – The UN Refugees Agency are invited to share with the community the grant funding programmes and  advisory as well as support services they are offering and how such programmes and services can be accessed by those who need them. With this intervention we seek to promote social cohesion and the right to equality for all to prevent xenophobic sentiments.

The Information Sharing Session and Outreach will take place as follows:

Date: 22 June 2021
Time: 10h00 AM to 13h00
Venue: Moses Links Community Hall (Louisvale Road), Upington

Ends

Prepared by the Northern Cape Provincial Office of the South African Human Rights Commission.
