Media Advisory: The SAHRC hosts a National Schools Moot Court Competition (NSMCC) workshop with schools from the Ngaka Modiri Molema District

On 24 June 2021, the South African Human Rights Commission’s (SAHRC) North West Provincial Office will conduct a National Schools Moot Court Competition (NSMCC) workshop with schools in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District.

The SAHRC has also conducted NSMCC workshop in the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District and the Bojanala District.

The NSMCC is a collaboration between the National Department of Basic Education (DBE), the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development (DoJ&CD) and the SAHRC.

In terms of section 184(2)(d) of the Constitution, the SAHRC is mandated to educate about human rights. NSMCC serves as a platform through which the SAHRC provide human rights education to hundreds of learners from various schools. The NSMCC exposes the learners to the Constitution, the rights in the Bill of Rights, the limitation of the rights, court processes, legal research and drafting and trial advocacy. The NSMCC provides the participating learners an opportunity to present their arguments in writing as well as orally in a courtroom before judicial officers.

The workshop is aimed at enhancing the capacity of the learners and to empower both learners and educators to effectively participate in the NSMCC by providing learners with:

•    Interpretation, application and limitation of the rights contained in the Bill of Rights;
•    Legal research and drafting;
•    Litigation techniques; and
•    Presenting oral arguments in a courtroom.

The workshop is scheduled to take place as follows:
