This year marks the 40th anniversary of the adoption of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, as a regional human rights instrument adopted by the then Organization of African Unity (OAU), now the African Union (AU) on 27 June 1981 and entered into force on 21 October 1986. The African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (African Charter / The Charter) was adopted by the African Union Heads of State and Government
The 40th anniversary of the Charter provides the opportunity for South Africa and the continent to reflect on the milestones achieved by the African system of human rights in advancing the right to freedoms and dignity of people across the continent; to assess how the Charter impacted on lived realities of ordinary people; and for the country to reflect on its contribution to the African Charter, its application and implementation.
The programme will feature notable South Africans who have served the African Commission in various capacities.
