MEDIA ADVISORY: The SAHRC in the North West Province will host the oral round of the National Schools Moot Court Competition

17 September 2021

ATTENTION: Editors and Reporters

On 18 September 2021, the South African Human Rights Commission’s (SAHRC) North West Provincial Office will host the oral round of the National Schools Moot Court Competition (NSMCC). The NSMCC is a collaboration between the National Department of Basic Education (DBE), the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development (DoJ&CD) and the SAHRC.

In terms of section 184(2)(d) of the Constitution, the SAHRC is mandated to educate about human rights. NSMCC serves as a platform through which the SAHRC provide human rights education to hundreds of learners from various schools. The NSMCC exposes the learners to the Constitution, the rights in the Bill of Rights, the limitation of the rights, court processes, legal research and drafting and trial advocacy. It also provides the participating learners with opportunities to make written and oral submissions.

In July 2021, learners from various schools in the North West Province participated in the NSMCC and made written submissions on a selected human rights case study. Learners from ten schools were selected to go through to the oral round of the NSMCC which provides learners with an opportunity to present oral arguments in a courtroom before judicial officers and legal practitioners.

In order to prepare the learners for the oral round of the NSMCC, the SAHRC will, on 17 September 2021, host a preparatory workshop with participating learners in order to enhance their trial advocacy and oral presentation skills. The preparatory workshop will also be used to orientate the learners on various aspects including court procedures and court etiquettes.

The oral round round of the NSMCC is scheduled to take place as follows:
Date:               Saturday, 18 September 2021
Venue:            Rustenburg Magistrates Court
Time:              10:00

Ends
