The South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission or the SAHRC) joins the rest of the nation in mourning the passing of Deputy Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Hlengiwe Mkhize who, sadly, passed away on the 16th September 2021 after a short illness.
Deputy Minister Mkhize is remembered for her dedication to her work, including her visible concern for the plight and rights of persons with disabilities. She shared many platforms created by the Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, with Commissioner Bokankatla Joseph Malatji – the SAHRC Commissioner responsible for the rights of persons with disabilities and older persons.
Deputy Minister Mkhize remained very passionate about the rights of persons with disabilities and was very instrumental in the proposed Disabilities Rights Framework & Disability Bill before Parliament.
She maintained an excellent rapport with organisations representing people with disabilities and played an exceedingly important role in overcoming the obstacles usually encountered by them in their efforts towards achieving the equal enjoyment of their human rights, especially during this global COVID-19 pandemic.
The Deputy Minister always advocated for the rights of persons with disabilities, showed understanding and came forward with solutions for any infringements on the rights of persons with disabilities that came to her attention. The Commission shares its deepest and most sincere condolences with her family, colleagues and friends.
