Media Alert: SAHRC to Host Monthly Media Briefings, the First to Be Held Thursday 30 September 2021

29 September 2021

Attention Editors and Reporters

The mandate of the South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission or the SAHRC) is, among others, to promote respect for human rights and a culture of human rights and includes powers to carry out research and to educate.
In line with this constitutional imperative, the SAHRC will host regular, monthly media briefings and use these media briefings as an opportunity to proactively keep all within South Africa abreast of developments in the work of the Commission as well as report on progress made on important matters. The Commission also sees this as an opportunity to highlight work it is doing that may ordinarily receive little media and public attention.

These briefings will be led by the Chairperson of the Commission, Adv. Bongani Majola, and the Deputy Chairperson, Commissioner Fatima Chohan. The relevant Commissioners, the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operations Officer and relevant Provincial Managers will provide support.

The Commission’s mandate is the broadest of all Chapter Nine institutions in that the SAHRC is responsible for the protection, promotion and monitoring of the observance of all the rights as outlined in the  Bill of Rights, within South Africa.
This media briefing, as all others to follow it, will focus on specific issues the SAHRC deems relevant and of particular importance to report on, at a specific point in time.

The first of these monthly media briefings, will specifically focus on:
1.    Concerns related to recurring service delivery failures in local government in many parts of the country and the impact thereof on human rights.
2.    Developments relating to freedom of expression and hate speech matters.
3.    The SAHRC’s briefing to the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Justice and Correctional Services.
The media briefing is to be held on Thursday 30 September 2021, between 12h00 and 13h30.

It will be conducted digitally and members of the media will be able to attend and pose questions by accessing the following link:
