MEDIA STATEMENT: SAHRC to Host the 2021 National Schools Moot Court Competition

05 October 2021

ATTENTION: Editors and Reporters

The 2021-2022 financial year marks the second year that the South African Human Rights Commission (Commission or SAHRC) participates in organising and hosting the National Schools Moot Court Competition (NSMCC).

The final leg of the competition commenced on the 4th September and ran until the 18th September 2021. The top performers from this round will now participate in the national finals which commence on Wednesday the 6th October 2021 and run until Sunday the 10th October 2021. This final stage of the national competition consists of each team arguing the human rights issue as applicant and respondent respectively. The grand finale will be held on Sunday, 10th October 2021.

Through the effective exercise of its promotional mandate, the Commission endeavours to capacitate South Africans to have agency in protecting and ensuring that their own human rights and those of others are respected. Among others, its promotional mandate educates and informs South Africans about their rights.

The Commission has found that the NSMCC is one of the most effective ways to ensure that learners in school are educated about their human rights. The NSMCC is the perfect platform for raising human rights awareness among learners and their friends and relatives, as it introduces all grade eleven learners to the Constitution and human rights. The NSMCC is a collaboration between the National Department of Basic Education (DBE), the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development (DoJ&CD) and the SAHRC. The current NSMCC began earlier this year with all grade eleven learners writing an essay on a pre-determined human rights issue and this ran from April until July. Top performers then reached a provincial round which consisted of argumentation around a human rights issue in a simulated court setting.

This year’s NSMCC will be held virtually, with teams from across South Africa being able to participate from anywhere in the country. Members of the public and the media can view the competition at the following link as well as the SAHRC website and social media pages.

The SAHRC and its partners are excited to be part of this innovative competition considering its national reach and scale. The current competition commences as  Team South Africa are the current champions at a global level,  having achieved a phenomenal win at the fifth International School Moot Court Competition, which concluded in Gdynia in Poland, on Friday, 31st January 2020.
