Media Advisory: SAHRC Gauteng provincial office to conduct a site inspection at the Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Plant in the City of Tshwane following the shutdown of operations due to poor quality of water

12 October 2021
Attention: Editors and Reporters

Tomorrow the South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) will conduct an inspection of the Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Plant in the City of Tshwane. This follows the decision by the City of Tshwane to temporarily shut down the plant due to the poor quality of water that is being processed at the plant.

The Commission’s inspection will seek to establish whether the City of Tshwane, and the Department of Water and Sanitation have conducted regular drinking water quality assessments to ensure that the drinking water quality in Bronkhorstspruit and other surrounding areas meets the prescribed standards.

The Commission will also check and assess the reasonableness of interim measures undertaken by the City of Tshwane to ensure the continued supply of water and the impact of the deteriorating water quality in Bronkhorstspruit and surrounding areas on communities.

The inspection will take place as follows:
Date: 13 October 2021
Time: 11h00
Venue: Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Plant
