Media Advisory: SAHRC launches report into the sewage pollution of the City of Tshwane rivers and Roodeplaat Dam

Attention: Editors and Reporters

25 October 2021

On Tuesday, 26 October 2021, the South African Human Rights Commission will host a launch of its report into the sewage pollution of the City of Tshwane’s rivers and the Roodeplaat Dam.

The launch follows an Investigative Inquiry into the state of the wastewater treatment works in the jurisdiction of the City of Tshwane which was held on 26 February 2021. The Inquiry took place after the Commission received repeated complaints from Hammanskraal residents and residents of surrounding areas regarding malfunctioning wastewater treatment works that was releasing untreated or partially treated sewage into the Apies and Pienaars Rivers and the Roodeplaat and Leeukraal Dams within the jurisdiction of the City of Tshwane. A number of ongoing engagements, and site visits with the City of Tshwane, and the Department of Water and Sanitation preceded the Inquiry.

Members of the media are welcome to attend and will be given an opportunity to pose questions to the authors of the report.

Details for the launch are as follows:

Date:   Tuesday, 26 October 2021

Time:   11:00 am to 12:00

Venue: Patrick Sebothoma Hall, Temba, Hammanskraal
