MEDIA INVITE: SAHRC to investigate living conditions of widows in Marikana

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) invites members of the media to an Inspection that will be conducted together with the Sikhala Sonke “Women of Marikana” at Wonderkop Stadium, Marikana tomorrow.


The inspection follows the death of 34 miners that were shot and killed by the police on 16 August 2012 during a strike at the Lonmin platinum mine in Marikana.

The purpose of the inspection by SAHRC is to assess the conditions in which the women and widows of Marikana are living under after the massacre and listen and address their concerns that government has not yet met.

The Inspection will be held as follows:

Date:   12 August 2014
Time:  10:30 am
Venue:  Wonderkop Stadium at Nkaneng (Marikana) North West Province (directions attached)

The Inspection will be led by SAHRC Deputy Chairperson Dr Pregs Govender and SAHRC staff and will involve representatives from the Sikhala Sonke “Women of Marikana” and other NGO’s.
