Media Invite: SAHRC Eastern Cape Provincial Office to conduct Monitoring, Human Rights Champion Empowerment, and Rollout the Equality Toolkit in the Joe Gqabi District

Attention: Editors and Reporters

06 December 2021

The South African Human Rights Commission will conduct various monitoring of schools, places of older persons, persons living with disabilities detention centres, equality courts and vaccination sites will be conducted.

Further, a human rights champion workshop on 7 December 2021 will be conducted. The identified human rights champions will be empowered on the mandate of the South African Human Rights Commission.

The role of Champions is to assist the SAHRC in the execution of its mandate, by strengthening real time access to communities and access to justice and serve as a link between the Commission and communities. In addition, the development of local Champions empowers vulnerable communities to access and realise their human rights; and to deepen an understanding of human rights, as over a period of time, levels of awareness increase through a multiplier effect.

The equality toolkit will be rolled out, to educate the Champions and courts on the role of the equality court and the right to equality.
