Although the sphere of local government is at the forefront of service delivery, it is faced with immense challenges, which affect the operation and maintenance of municipal infrastructure. Statistics reveal that insufficient attention is being paid to water and sanitation infrastructure by municipalities, with only 2% of the budget of municipalities being used for maintenance. This is far lower than the norm of 8%, and leads to the degradation of vital assets such as waste water treatment plants.
The purpose of the webinar is to, amongst others, provide a platform for engagement amongst key role players to engage on solutions and mechanisms to ensure efficient infrastructure development and service delivery in the sphere of local government. The webinar will hear presentations from the SAHRC, MISA, some of the piloting institutions of the District Development Model, and the Centre for Applied Legal Studies. The envisioned outcomes of the webinar include inter alia an improved understanding of the role played by MISA in the support and capacitation programmes to municipalities; as well as knowledge exchange on the mechanisms to ensure infrastructure development and management in municipalities.
The webinar will be hosted as follows:
Date: 27 January 2022
