Media Advisory: The South African Human Rights Commission to Conduct a Site Inspection of Tholimfundo Primary School

02 February 2022
Attention: Editors and Reporters

On Thursday, 03 February 2022, the South African Human Rights Commission (“The Commission”) will conduct a site inspection of the Tholimfundo Primary School in Protea Glen, Soweto.

The Commission has initiated an investigation following a complaint that 508 learners at the school are being taught in unsafe prefab mobile classrooms as the Gauteng Department of Education works to finish construction that began 20 years ago. These mobile containers are used as classrooms to teach learners from Grade 4 to 7. It is alleged that the electrical connections in some of the containers are exposed which poses a risk to both learners and the teachers. It is further alleged that the school’s ablution facilities are poorly maintained, with sewerage leak that poses health risks. The ablution facilities are shared by the 1100 learners and staff members of the school.

The Commission’s inspection seeks test the veracity of these claims. The Commission has invited the Department of Education, the Department of Infrastructure Development, and the City of Joburg to be part of this inspection.

The Inspection will take place as follows:
Date: 03 February 2022
Time: 10h30
Venue: Tholimfundo Primary School, Protea Glen
