Media Advisory: SAHRC Gauteng Provincial Office to embark on a roadshow in the West Rand and Sedibeng region focusing on service delivery

 Attention: Editors and Reporters

07 February 2022

The South African Human Rights Commission’s Gauteng Provincial Office will, this week, embark on an awareness and information sharing roadshow and human rights monitoring in various parts of the West Rand and Sedibeng districts in Gauteng. During the four-day roadshow, the Commission will share information on human rights and engage with municipalities on service delivery challenges and specific areas of potential collaboration.

Section 7(2) of the Constitution express that Local Government must respect, protect, promote and fulfil human rights such as the right to water, a clean and healthy environment, and housing amongst others. The Constitution places a legal duty on those in Local Government to ensure that human rights are considered when developing policies, making laws, delivering services and making decisions. The Commission will use this roadshow to forge institutional links with various municipalities and to monitor (or keep track of) what Local Government is doing as this sphere is involved in rendering a wide range of services which materially affect the lives of people.

The roadshow will be rolled out as follows:
