Media Advisory: SAHRC Eastern Cape Provincial Office to conduct an inspection at various villages in Ward 1 of Senqu Municipality to assess potential rights violations of learners crossing rivers in order to access basic education

Attention: Editors and Reporters

07 February 2022

The Eastern Cape Provincial Office of the South African Human Rights Commission (Commission) has noted from media reports the dangerous conditions learners face in attempting to access their right to basic education within areas of the province. In view thereof, as well as the urgent need to ensure that the safety and best interests of children are upheld, the SAHRC will be visiting the areas affected to inspect and assess the concerns herein.

In this regard, the SAHRC will be conducting its assessment as follows:

  • 9 February 2022
  • Mkhonjana in Cacadu, Mbilatye, Nyongwane, Sigxeni and Hala in Ward 1 of Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality

The Commission remains vigilant in safeguarding the rights of learners and underscores the need to ensure that learners are able to access education without debilitating circumstances impeding the access to this fundamental right. The inspection will inform any possible urgent redress required in this regard.
