Media Advisory: SAHRC Northern Cape Provincial Office to Host a Provincial Stakeholder Engagement

01 March 2022

Attention: Editors and Reporters

The South African Human Rights Commission (The Commission) has an embedded responsibility of ensuring that human rights continue to be at the centre of debates and dialogues in the country and that the rights as enshrined in Chapter 2 (The Bill of Rights) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996 are transformed into a reality for people who need protection. It is similarly important that citizens should also claim and assert their rights, while accepting the responsibilities that correspond with having those rights.

The reality of the situation on the ground is that the Commission is not, at all material times, closer or in the vicinity of where incidents of human rights violations are taking place, hence, the onus is on the Commission to reach out to marginalised communities to alert them of its existence and its mandate; to partner and/or work together with established structures at the local level who, at a go and without hesitation, can report incidents of human rights violations to the Commission for intervention.

It is against this background that the Commission will be hosting a Provincial Stakeholder Engagement with the ǃXun and Khwe Communal Property Association in Plaatfontein.

The purpose of the Provincial Stakeholder Engagement is as follows:

•    To inform the ǃXun and Khwe Communal Property Association about the mandate of the Commission;
•    To inform the ǃXun and Khwe Communal Property Association about the Commission’s complaints handling procedures;
•    To capacitate the ǃXun and Khwe Communal Property Association on the Equality Toolkit;
•    To promote the functionality of the Equality Court, and
•    To identify and recruit Community Human Rights Champions;

The Provincial Stakeholder Engagement will take place as follows:

Date: Wednesday, 02 March 2022
Time: 10h00 AM to 13h00 PM
Venue: !Xun Church, Plaatfontein
Ends

Prepared by the Northern Cape Provincial Office of the South African Human Rights Commission.
