Media Advisory: SAHRC Northern Cape Provincial Office to Convene a Human Rights Dialogue on Xenophobia and Discrimination against Non-South African Citizens

03 March 2022

Attention: Editors and Reporters

Immigration is one of the seven (7) focus areas of work identified by the South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) in order to effectively fulfil its mandate of promoting, protecting and monitoring the realisation of human rights in the Republic of South Africa. The increasing incidences of xenophobic violence and unfair discrimination against foreign-nationals have also necessitated that the Commission maintain its focus on immigration issues and the rights of foreign nationals.

The Commission protects the rights of all people living in South Africa, including non-nationals. It does this by using its powers as contained in the South African Human Rights Act No. 40 of 2013 (SAHRC Act) and by also working in partnership with a wide range of stakeholders to promote equality for all. It is further worth mentioning that the constitutionally guaranteed right to equality and the equal protection and benefit of the law apply with equal force to foreign nationals within the Republic of South Africa.

In recent times, the Northern Cape Provincial Office has been inundated with complaints of persisting victimisation and unwarranted attacks meted out to foreign-nationals by law enforcement agencies and South Africans citizens.

As part of contributing towards the commitment made by the South African Governments towards protecting and assisting Non-South African Citizens as required by its international and national obligations under the law, the Northern Cape Provincial Office will be hosting a Human Rights Dialogue on Xenophobia and Discrimination against Non-South African Citizens.

The Human Rights Dialogue will take place as follows:

Date: Friday, 04 March 2022
Time: 09h00 AM to 13h00 PM
Venue: Kimberley Club (35 Currie Street), Kimberley

Ends

Prepared by the Northern Cape Provincial Office of the South African Human Rights Commission.
