Media Advisory: SAHRC in Eastern Cape to conduct monitoring of schools relating to infrastructure and racism complaints

Attention: Editors and Reporters

09 March 2022

On the 10th of March 2022 the South African Human Rights Commission (Commission) in the Eastern Cape will be conducting site inspections and monitoring activities at schools within the Gqeberha area. The inspections will be led by the area focus Commissioner for basic education, National Commissioner Adv A Gaum and will focus on infrastructure and racism complaints received from the region.

The Commission’s inspections will be followed by a formal engagement with the MEC of Education in the Eastern Cape, in order to ventilate findings as well as general concerns relating to the state of access to basic education within the province.

The Commission remains vigilant in safeguarding the rights of learners and underscores the need for all stakeholders to ensure that learners are able to access education without hindrance and discrimination.
