Attention: Editors and Reporters
On the 11th of March 2022 the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) in the Eastern Cape Province hosted a successful engagement with tertiary institutions within the Province. The aim of the engagement was to embark on a formalised relationship with these institutions in order to bolster the SAHRC’s investigation efforts from a research, intervention and technical point of view.
The Universities unequivocally expressed their support for a formalised working relationship with the SAHRC and expressly aligned themselves with the work and objectives of the SAHRC. Furthermore, the institutions indicated a willingness to provide appropriate and expert assistance where necessary as well as to contribute towards cultivating a holistic human rights culture within society.
Vice Chancellor Dr Sizwe Mabizela from Rhodes University stated that Universities partnering with the SAHRC can only benefit society. The SAHRC is thus excited to join hands with institutions within the province to ensure that human rights advocacy and investigations are strengthened in order to serve towards the needs of the communities within the province, as well as the country.
A memorandum of understanding will now be developed and formalised in order to ensure mutual benefit to parties in line with the collective human rights agenda.
