Media Advisory: SAHRC Eastern Cape to host a stakeholder engagement with COGTA on areas affected by floods within the province

03 May 2022

Attention: Editors and Reporters

During the past month, disruptive and heavy rains have lead to localized flooding of vulnerable settlements, infrastructure, roads, low-lying areas and bridges within the Eastern Cape Province. Damage has been reported to areas within the Alfred Nzo District municipality, as well as the Joe Gqabi and OR Tambo District Municipalities. The Eastern Cape South African Human Rights Commission (“Commission”) conducted monitoring visits in Libode and its surrounding villages and the King Sabatha Dalindyebo District’s surrounding villages to assess damage to various areas as has been reported to our office.
Further monitoring was conducted in Centane to assess the damage caused to schools in the area by the floods.
Accordingly, and in order to monitor and provide redress, the Commission will hold a stakeholder engagement with Commissioner Chris Nissen to ventilate possible areas of cooperation and assistance in view of the above. The areas to ventilate include investigating the further extent of the damage caused by the floods in the affected areas. To ascertain the progress of the distribution of relief packages and address the progress of the Government’s response to the disaster in the areas. Finally, to ascertain the adequacy of short, medium and long term responses to the disaster in the province.  The stakeholder engagement will be held as follows:

Date: 4th of May 2022
Time:  09H00 – 11H00
Venue: Microsoft Teams/Eastern Cape Provincial Office Boardroom

The stakeholder engagement will include participants from Corporate Governance and Traditional Affairs and the Walter Sisulu University Risk and Vulnerability Science Centre. The aim of the planned stakeholder engagement is therefore to ventilate these matters accordingly.
