Media Advisory: SAHRC KwaZulu-Natal Office and the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development KZN embarks on a schools campaign ahead of Child Protection Week

Attention: Editors and Reporters

24 May 2022

As part of Child Protection week, the South African Human Rights Commission (Commission) KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Office in collaboration with the KZN Provincial Office of the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development will be embarking on an integrated advocacy campaign in schools in the Zululand District, Mahlabathini CMC.

During the campaign, the Commission will be promoting its Child Friendly Complaints Handling Procedures (CFCHP), engaging with learners on sexual abuse, bullying, teenage pregnancy, harmful traditional practices, and child marriage. The campaign is also meant to capacitate learners with targeted basic legal education, particularly with enabling skills to identify human rights threats or violations and report such directly to the Commission and other relevant stakeholders.

The Commission is concerned about the well-being of all children in South Africa and continues to prioritise complaints of violations of children’s rights. The Commission firmly believes that complaints involving children’s rights need to be treated with priority and sensitivity.

The campaign is scheduled to take place as follows:
