The Day of the African Child has been commemorated since 1991, when it was first initiated by the African Union (AU) which was previously known as the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) to honour the youth who participated in the Soweto Uprising of 1976.
In accordance with its constitutional mandate as set out in Section 184 of the South African Constitution, the South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) continues to monitor, protect and promote the rights of children and the youth.
The Commission’s KZN Provincial Office in partnership with various stakeholders will host workshops in the areas of Mtubatuba and Pongola in the uMkhanyakude District (North of the Province). The workshops are aimed at capacitating the youth on the significance of youth day, their basic rights and responsibilities, opportunities to engage and provide access to critical stakeholders, to empower and upskill the youth on various skills and career opportunities.
A number of stakeholders will be part of these workshops and will capacitate the youth on their mandate and also impart skills. These include amongst others, the National Youth Development Agency, Dept. of Social Development, Dept. of Economic Development and the Dept. of Tourism and Environmental Affairs. The workshops will also include participation from the private sector.
The KZNPO has partnered with organisations in the entertainment industry and will provide a workshop to the youth in Pongola under these entertainment themes: Film/ TV, Movie Screening, and the Music Industry.
