Attention: Editors and Reporters
20 June 2022
The South African Human Rights Commission (“Commission”) has noted media reports of violence resulting in multiple deaths in the Qhumanco Village in Cofimvaba, and growing tensions between South Africans and non-nationals within the area. Reports have also alluded to allegations of xenophobia which has emanated from criminal conduct and a growing distrust between members of the community.
The Commission’s Eastern Cape Provincial Office will consequently visit the area tomorrow, 21 June 2022 to assess the concerns of the local community and engage relevant stakeholders on the ground. The Commission further calls on the South African Police Service (“SAPS”) to provide the necessary resources to investigate the reported deaths, elements of criminality, as well as quelling concerns of retaliatory xenophobic attacks.
The Commission further calls on officials, traditional leaders and the community of Qhumanco to remain law abiding and to resolve issues in a manner that is acceptable in a democracy. The Commission underscores a move towards social cohesion whilst safeguarding the human rights of all communities living in the area.
