Media Advisory: The South African Human Rights Commission is calling for further Submissions on allegations of racial discrimination or discrimination in advertising

06 July 2022

Attention: Editors and Reporters
On 14 March 2022, the South African Human Rights Commission (“the Commission”) commenced an inquiry into racial discrimination and other forms of discrimination in advertising (“the Advertising Inquiry” or “the Inquiry”).  The first leg of the Inquiry concluded on 18 April 2022, and the second leg of the Inquiry will run from 29 August 2022 until 9 September 2022.

South Africa, like other countries, has been exposed through radio, television and/or online shopping and social media platforms, to advertisements or marketing material (referred to as “adverts”), which is discriminatory on the grounds of, amongst others, race, gender, sex, age and disability. The objective of the Inquiry is to understand how it is discriminatory adverts come to be created and published and what the Commission can do to prevent the further creation and publication of discriminatory adverts.
As part of the Inquiry, members of the public, interested parties and organisations are invited to make written submissions to the Commission. The submissions should include possible solutions to addressing discriminatory adverts.

Written submissions must reach the Commission by Friday, 19 August 2022.
