On Tuesday, 12 July 2022, the South African Human Rights Commission (“the Commission”) will meet with the City of Tshwane and the Department of Water and Sanitation in Pretoria to assess progress made in implementing its recommendations concerning the state of the City of Tshwane’s rivers and the Roodeplaat Dam.
In October 2021, the Commission issued a report which required organs of state to urgently intervene to correct human rights violations in Hammanskraal and other surrounding areas in the City of Tshwane. The Commission directed that all State Respondents to which the findings and issues applied, to respond to the Commission jointly or separately, within 60 days of receiving the report.
The Commission will receive submissions from the City of Tshwane, the Department of Water and Sanitation and Human Rights Monitors from the various communities affected by the untreated sewage and water pollution.
