Media Advisory: SAHRC Eastern Cape to conduct monitoring on the lack of access to water in villages in the Amathole district

Attention: Editors and Reporters

26 July 2022

The South African Human Rights Commission’s (Commission) Eastern Cape Provincial Office (ECPO) is working with the Centre of Applied Legal Studies (CALS) to bring water to the Kunene, Merelisa and Toboyi villages in the Butterworth area.

This follows a complaint received from Sonke Gender Justice, indicating that there is  continuous lack of physical accessibility and availability of water in the villages.  Vulnerable and marginalized communities should receive priority in terms of access to water as limited access to water exacerbates poverty and affects other mutually linked rights such as the right to health and education.

The SAHRC will be conducting an in loco inspection in the villages to assess the extent of human rights violations of the lack of access to water and to ascertain measures to address these human rights violations.
The inspection will be conducted as follows:

Date: 26th of July 2022
Time:  09H00 – 12H00
Areas: Kunene, Merelisa and Toboyi villages

- Ends –
