Media Advisory: SAHRC Eastern Cape Provincial Office to commence with a four-day inquiry to investigate the right to food and malnutrition

Attention: Editors and Reporters

7 August 2022

The South African Human Rights Commission in the Eastern Cape (the Commission) has received complaints, coupled with various media reports pertaining to the death of children due to Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) caused by hunger. Studies and statistics further indicate that many children in the province live in abject poverty and as a result are malnourished. In view thereof, and in line with its mandate, the Commission will be hosting a Provincial Inquiry into the Right to Food and Child Malnutrition.
The panel for this inquiry will include Commissioners Angie Makwetla, as well as Jonas Sibanyoni, and proceedings will be livestreamed.

Stakeholders to provide evidence under oath include the Department of Social Development, Treasury, the Auditor General, as well as the Health and Education departments within the province. UNICEF, Statsaa, Accountability Now, the Children’s Institute as well as several other stakeholders have confirmed their attendance to appear before the Commission to address this very important and pressing matter.

Details of the Inquiry are as follows:
Date: 8th – 12th of August 2022
Time:  08H00 – 16H30
Venue: Eastern Cape Provincial Office Boardroom (East London) and Live Stream
