In December, January and April, disruptive and heavy rains led to localized flooding of vulnerable settlements, infrastructure, roads, low-lying areas and bridges within the Eastern Cape province. Damage was reported in areas within the Alfred Nzo District and the O R Tambo District. The SAHRC has engaged with the relevant government departments and will be conducting further monitoring to ascertain the progress of addressing the flood disaster.
Monitoring activities will include site visits to disaster areas, healthcare facilities, detention centres, local government service delivery and schools.
