The South African Human Rights Commission (Commission) is a Constitutional body, established to support constitutional democracy in terms of Section 181 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996 (Constitution). Section 184(1) (b) of the Constitution obliges the Commission to promote the protection of human rights and monitor and assess the observance of human rights in the Republic of South Africa.
The SAHRC Limpopo Provincial Office will conduct a 2-day stakeholder engagement with the Steenbokpan Farm Community in Lephalale Local Municipality as a follow-up to the SAHRC Deputy Chairperson, Ms Fatima Chohan Limpopo provincial visit in March 2022, particularly with Steenbokpan farm-dwellers and workers community.
The Deputy Chairperson’s visit highlighted the myriad of human rights violations of socio-economic rights faced by the Steenbokpan Farm Community and the need for immediate intervention from government institutions. One of the major human rights violations encountered is the fact that the Steenbokpan Farm community does not have access to basic services, which is a cause for serious concern. The Stakeholder Engagement will take place as follows:
