Media Advisory: The SAHRC Gauteng Office to hold an engagement with the property and insurance industry on the notion of occupational health and safety as a human right in South Africa

Attention: Editors and reporters
Date: 23 August 2022

On Thursday, 25 August 2022, the South African Human Rights Commission’s Gauteng Provincial Office will host a stakeholder engagement on the notion of occupational health and safety as a human right.

Since 2018, the Commission has been raising concerns about the safety of buildings in the province. In recent years, the health and safety concerns pertaining to Civitas Building in Pretoria received wide media coverage which was revived in the aftermath of the Bank of Lisbon Building which resulted in the death of three firefighters.

It is against this backdrop that the Commission has, in the exercise of its discretion, deemed it appropriate to convene a stakeholder engagement to understand the challenges in the property sector, the need for rigorous building occupancy certification and to explore solutions to mitigate against the threat to the employees’ right in terms of section 12 of Constitution and other related rights.
This important engagement will be attended by representatives from the Registrar of Deeds, the South African Property Owners Association, and the South African Insurance Association.

Details of the engagement are as follows:

Date: 25 August 2022
Venue: SAHRC, 1st Floor, JD House, 27 Stiemens Street, Braamfontein
Time: 14:00
