Media Advisory: SAHRC Northern Cape Provincial Office to Conduct Community Human Rights Champions Empowerment Workshop

26 August 2022

Attention: Editors and Reporters

In executing its mandate, the South African Human Rights Commission (The Commission) is constantly creating informal partnerships with community-based organisations and civil society organisations to act as the Commission’s primary point of entry in various local communities where the Commission is not present. A number of factors work in the favour of these organisations and structures as they are located in the areas where people live, speak the same language and are known and trusted by the members of the communities where they are located; are knowledgeable about local conditions and know the history and the needs of the local communities and are keen to contribute to the work of the Commission.

The Commission is alive to the reality that it cannot always be closer or be in the vicinity of where incidents of human rights violations are taking place, hence it continues to partner and work together with organisations and structures at various local communities who at a go and without hesitation can report such incidents to the Commission for intervention.

The Northern Cape Provincial Office continues to identify and recruit Community Human Rights Champions from the community-based organisations and civil society organisations to assist it by strengthening real time access to communities and access to justice; and serve as a link between the Commission and communities. It is envisaged that local Community Human Rights Champions will empower vulnerable communities to claim and assert their rights; and to deepen an understanding of human rights, as over a period of time, levels of awareness increase through a multiplier effect.

The Northern Cape Provincial Office will be conducting an Empowerment Workshop for Community Human Rights Champions scheduled to take place as follows:

Date: Monday, 29 August 2022
Time: 10:00 AM to 13:00 PM
Municipal Area and Town: Thembelihle Local Municipality, Hopetown

•           Human Rights and the Bill of Rights as well as Enforcing the Rights in the Bill of Rights;
•           SAHRC Complaints Handling Procedure;
