26 August 2022
On 26 August the South African Human Rights Commission (Commission) will, and through the KwaZulu Natal House of Traditional Leaders, host a women’s month event to engage with women traditional leaders on the gendered impact of climate change. The stakeholder engagement is hosted in partnership with the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities, Sonke Gender Justice, and the Legal Resources Centre.
The engagement follows, and is in line with, monitoring interventions conducted by the Commission following the floods that affected the KwaZulu Natal Province in April 2022. As early as the immediate aftermath of the floods to date, the Commission has, and continues to engage with communities, civil society, and with the Provincial Government of KwaZulu Natal regarding humanitarian responses to the floods.
The stakeholder engagement will interrogate and discuss the role that women traditional leaders play in intervening on climate change through a gendered lens. This engagement is intended to, amongst other:
- discuss the gendered impact of climate change and offer a platform for mutual learning;
- discuss strategies and innovations in protecting and promoting human rights in traditional communities;
- understand challenges faced by female traditional leaders in responding to climate change from a gendered perspective;
- explore areas of collaboration amongst workshop attendees, particularly in capacity building; and identify issues for further deliberations.
The event will be held as follows:
Date: Friday, 26 August 2022
Venue: 455a King Dinuzulu Highway, Archie Gumede Conference Centre, Mayville,
Durban
Time: 08h30 – 14h30
