Media invite: SAHRC Mpumalanga Office hosts a dialogue on the impact of the lack of high school for learners with disabilities in Mpumalanga

Attention: Editors and Reporters
20 September 2022

The Mpumalanga Provincial Office (MPO) will be hosting a dialogue on the impact of the lack of high school for learners with disabilities in the province.  Learners with disabilities and their parents in the province continue to face challenges because of the lack of and delay in building of a high school for learners with disabilities.
The Constitution guarantees the right to equality and prohibits unfair discrimination by the State and private individuals.
In addition, section 29(1)(a) speaks to the right to a basic education which is closely linked with the right to equality and the prohibition of unfair discrimination. It states that the State must provide a basic education to all, without unfairly discriminating against any learner. Learners with disabilities in Mpumalanga are facing huge challenges of unfair discrimination by government and communities due to their conditions. The lack of a high school for learners with disabilities in the province is a violation of their education, equality and dignity rights.

The MPO will therefore be conducting a dialogue which aims at emphasising the importance to acquire same opportunities for learners with disabilities to learn, grow their full potential and enjoy the same right to quality education as any other South African child. The main objective of the dialogue is to seek commitments and time-bound plan on the building of a high school for learners with disabilities from the Department of Education in Mpumalanga.

The dialogue is envisaged to be held on 21 September 2022 at Mercure Hotel, Mbombela commencing at 09h00 to14h00
Ends
