Media Release: The North West Provincial Office will conduct a human rights dialogue on the rights of farm dwellers in Straatsdrift and Tshwaro Farms in Groot Marico under the Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality

Date: 10 October 2022

Attention: Editors and Reporters

The SAHRC’s North West Provincial Office received a complaint concerning the violation of the rights of the farm dwellers at Straatsdrift farms in Groot Marico under the jurisdiction of Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality. The human rights challenges raised involve, among others, shortage of water; lack of proper sanitation and healthcare services; inadequate housing; lack of police visibility; abuse of labourers’ rights and lack of basic municipality services at the Straatsdrift farms.

The provincial office will be conducting a human rights dialogue to discuss the challenges faced by the dwellers of Straatsdrift farms and other surrounding farms, including Tshwaro Farms. The SAHRC is concerned about innumerable violations of farm dwellers socio-economic rights which need immediate intervention from government institutions. The dialogue will provide an opportunity for relevant stakeholders to explore opportunities for the speedy resolution of all complaints and challenges raised by the Straatsdrift farms dwellers and surrounding farms and the establishment of effective communication mechanisms between our respective institutions.

The engagement is planned to run for two days on 10 – 11 October 2022 and will be conducted in two phases as follows:

  1. Inspections at the farms and consultation with the farm dwellers

Date: 10 October 2022

Time: 09:00am

Venue: Straatsdrift farms

  1. Dialogue session

Date: 11 October 2022

Time: 10:00
