Media Advisory: SAHRC to sign MOUs with all Universities in the Eastern Cape

Attention: Editors and Reporters
14 October 2022

In a significant move towards improving rights realization and protection within the province of the Eastern Cape and South Africa as a whole, the South African Human Rights Commission (Commission) in the Eastern Cape will be signing Memoranda of Understanding with all the universities within the Province, namely Walter Sisulu, Rhodes, Fort Hare as well as Nelson Mandela Universities. This will occur during a high level engagement on the 17th of October 2022, in Gqeberha, which will be led by the Commission’s National Deputy Chairperson, Commissioner Fatima Chohan, and supported by the area focus Commissioner, Adv. Andre Gaum.

The MOUs determine in main, that Universities will provide technical support towards the work of the Commission, as well as streamline human rights awareness accordingly. This will not only strengthen the work of the Commission but also improve the knowledge capacity of all partners in the practical realization of chapter 2 of our Constitution. Further to this, it will promote a culture of human rights amongst students enrolled at these institutions, which will feed into the national agenda of the Commission’s SHiNE initiative in promoting social harmony.

Representatives from all said universities, Chapter 9 and 10 Institutions, the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development and other key role-players will be present during this engagement, which is sure to cement current and future partnerships between the Commission and our human rights stakeholders.

The stakeholder engagement is scheduled to take place as follows:

Date:   17 October 2022

Venue: The Radisson, Gqeberha

Time:   18h00

Ends
