Media Advisory: SAHRC Eastern Cape to conduct site inspections in Port St Johns and Lusikisiki on flood disaster effects

In April 2022, disruptive and heavy rains led to localized flooding of vulnerable settlements, infrastructure, roads, low-lying areas and bridges within the Eastern Cape Province. Damage was reported in areas within the Alfred Nzo, Chis Hani, Amathole as well as the Joe Gqabi and OR Tambo District Municipalities. In the aftermath of the flood disaster, the Eastern Cape Provincial Office (“ECPO”) conducted monitoring visits in the affected areas to assess the damage caused by the floods and the progress made by government to respond to the reported damage caused by the floods.

The ECPO with Commissioner Ntuli will conduct site inspections in Port St Johns and Lusikisiki to assess the progress made by government in response to the flood disaster damages.Further inspections will be conducted on the right to housing, water and sanitation in the Makhalafu and Phola Park informal settlements.

The site inspections will be held as follows:

The site inspections will include traditional leaders, ward councilors and community advice offices from the affected areas.
