Media Advisory: SAHRC Eastern Cape Provincial Office to conduct an inspection of the Buffalo river and partial coastline of the East London

Attention: Editors and Reporters
21 November 2022

The Commission’s Eastern Cape Provincial Office (‘ECPO’) confirms that it is investigating several complaints which relate to inadequate sanitation services and systems regarding the collection, removal or disposal of human excreta, refuse and wastewater resulting in sewerage spills into East London rivers thus having a negative impact on the environment, bodies of water and the health & wellbeing of persons.

As part of its mandate to promote and protect one’s right to human dignity, including that of ensuring that everyone has a right to an environment that is not harmful to their health or wellbeing and to have their environment protected, the ECPO, along with our National Commissioner, Commissioner Ntuli, will be embarking on an inspection of the Buffalo River and partial coastline of East London by way boat, for the purposes of identifying hotspots of environmental degradation and contamination due to failing sanitation services.

Our Commissioner Ntuli and the ECPO will be piloted and accompanied by the South African Maritime Safety Authority, whose mission is to promote maritime interests while ensuring health and environmental protection, as well as the South African Police Service and the Green Scorpions.

The inspection will be followed by a stakeholder engagement.
The inspection and stakeholder engagement is scheduled to take place as follows:

Date:   22nd November 2022
Time:   16:00 – 17:30
Venue: Offices of SAMSA / East London harbour

Ends
