Media Advisory: SAHRC Eastern Cape to host a stakeholder engagement with Eastern Cape Metropolitan and District Municipalities

22 November 2022

 Attention: Editors and Reporters

The Eastern Cape Provincial Office (“ECPO”) is cognisant that it has to create, maintain and improve close relationships with key acting agents and role player in order to fulfil its mandate and to ensure that human rights are realised in the province. It is in light of this view that the ECPO has identified Metropolitan and District Municipalities as key role players in the realisation of human rights in the province.

Our national Commissioner Ntuli is conducting a Provincial visit during the month of November and has been conducting site inspections around the province on human rights issues relating to housing, flood disaster effects, water and sanitation with a focus on the continued existence of the bucket system.

The Commission will conduct a stakeholder engagement at a high-level meeting with our national Commissioner Philile Ntuli to ventilate possible areas of cooperation and assistance in view of the above. The purpose of this meeting is to bring to the attention of the District Municipalities the systematic challenges relating to human rights in the province, to engage on the issue of non-responsiveness of Municipalities, to engage on challenges faced by Municipalities in ensuring service delivery and to foster a close cooperation and collaboration with Metropolitan, District Municipalities and SALGA to ensure service delivery.

The stakeholder engagement will be held as follows:

Date: 23rd of November 2022

Time:  08H30 – 09H30

              10H00-12H30

Venue: Eastern Cape Provincial Office Boardroom and Microsoft Teams

The stakeholder engagement will include participants from all the Eastern Cape Metropolitan and District Executive Mayors, Municipal Managers and SALGA and will be chaired by Commissioner P. Ntuli.
