Media Release: SAHRC North West Provincial Office will conduct a follow-up human rights dialogue on the rights on farm dwellers in Straatsdrift and Tshwaro Farms

Date: 02 December 2022

Attention: Editors and Reporters

The SAHRC’s North West Provincial Office received a complaint concerning the violation of the rights of the farm dwellers at Straatsdrift farms in Groot Marico under the jurisdiction of Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality. The human rights challenges raised involve, among others, shortage of water; lack of proper sanitation and healthcare services; inadequate housing; lack of police visibility; and violation of labourers’ rights.

On 10 October 2022, the provincial office and officials from other stakeholders conducted site inspections in Straatsdrift and Tshwaro Farms. On 11 October 2022, the provincial office held a human rights dialogue to discuss the observations and challenges faced by the dwellers of Straatsdrift farms and other surrounding farms, including Tshwaro Farms. The dialogue also provided an opportunity for stakeholders to explore opportunities for the speedy resolution of all complaints and challenges raised by the affected farm dwellers.

At the dialogue of 11 October 2022, it was agreed that a follow-up engagement would be conducted on 5 December 2022 to provide an opportunity for all stakeholders to give feedback on the steps taken in the intervening period to respond to the human rights challenges observed during the site inspections of 10 October 2022.

The follow-up engagement will be conducted as follows:

Date: 05 December 2022

Time: 09:00

Venue: Municipal Council Chambers – Ramotshere Moiloa, Zeerust
