Media Advisory: SAHRC Gauteng Provincial Office celebrates International Human Rights Day by hosting a mental health awareness initiative in Tembisa

Attention: Editors and Reporters

08 December 2022

In commemoration of International Human Rights Day, the South African Human Rights Commission Gauteng Provincial Office (GPO) will be hosting a Mental Health Awareness Initiative in Tembisa. International Human Rights Day celebrates the rights and freedom of all persons and encourages the respect and observance of rights for all nations and those outside the borders of the country.

International Human Rights Day is observed every year on 10 December and commemorates the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. The stigma of mental health in society marginalizes persons with mental health challenges and places them in a vulnerable state where their rights and freedoms cannot be fully realized and utilized.

The Gauteng Provincial Office will utilize this celebration and commemoration of the rights for all, to highlight the rights of one of the marginalized and stigmatized groups, namely persons with mental health challenges or illness in the community of Tembisa.

The details of the celebrations are as follows:

Date: 09 December 2022

Time: 10:30-13:00

Venue: Tlama Tlama Primary School, Tembisa

Ends
