Media Invite: SAHRC Mpumalanga Provincial Office hosts a workshop on the rights of unmarried fathers

Attention: Editors and Reporters

23 February 2023

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) Mpumalanga Provincial Office is conducting a workshop to popularise and raise awareness about the Constitutional Court judgement which declared Section 10 of the Births and Deaths Registration Act 51 of 1992 invalid and inconsistent with the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa (“the Constitution”) the extent that it prohibits an unmarried father from giving notice of the birth of his child under his surname, the absence of the child’s mother or without consent.

The workshop is aimed at empowering community-based organisations as well as the society at large on the rights of children who have been excluded from school due to lack of documentation, undocumented persons who were born in South Africa as well as stateless persons.

Furthermore, the Commission will be popularizing its Social Harmony National Effort (SHiNE) initiative. The aim is to commit every South African to reflect on and acting in small but important ways to develop respect and harmony in their homes and communities.

The workshop is held as follows:

Date: 23 February 2023

Venue: MRTT, Kanyamazane

Time: 09h00 – 15h00

Ends
