Media advisory: Invitation to attend and participate in a roundtable discussion on Balancing the right to basic education and the best interest of the child in Independent Schools

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) KZN provincial office will be hosting a roundtable discussion on “Balancing the right to basic education and the best interest of the child in Independent Schools”.

The aim of the discussion is to:

  1. Create awareness on the legal framework in relation to the provision of basic education in independent schools.
  2.  Develop understanding of the constitutional obligations of Independent Schools in providing the right to education.
  3.  Recognise challenges faced by independent schools in providing education.
  4. Create understanding of the ‘best interests of the child’ principle.
  5. The role of the Department of Basic Education in regulating Independent Schools.

Accordingly, the SAHRC invites stakeholders within the independent education (school) sector i.e., school managers, governing bodies, parents, and learner representative councils to attend and participate in the roundtable discussion.
