Media Advisory: SAHRC Eastern Cape Provincial Office to conduct a media networking session

Attention: Editors and Reporters

27 March 2023

In terms of sections 13(1) (b) (i), (ii), (iii) and (iv) of the South African Human Rights Commission (Commission) Act 40 of 2013, the Commission must develop and conduct educational programmes to foster public awareness and understanding of Chapter 2 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa. Further, the Commission has a duty to maintain close liaison and institutions with similar objectives in order to foster common policies, practices and to further the objectives and mandate of the Commission. Finally, the Commission may consider recommendations, suggestions and requests concerning the promotion of respect of human rights it may receive from any other source. This includes the media.

Section 16 (1) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa also provides that everyone has the right to freedom of expression, and this extends to the media.

In light thereof, the SAHRC in Eastern Cape intends to conduct a media networking session to reflect and evaluate on how the SAHRC and the media can strengthen their relationship in order to ensure that human rights are respected, promoted and protected in the province. This engagement will also reflect on the importance of the Commission’s newly released Social Media Charter, and the duty the media has to prevent the spread of mis-and disinformation under our general SHiNE theme of the month: “A call to action: defending human rights in the age of Social Media”

The session is scheduled to take place as follows:

Date:   28th of March 2023

Time:   10:00 – 11:00

Venue: Microsoft Teams
