Human Rights Day is observed annually on March 21st to remember and honour those who died in the Sharpeville massacre on that date in 1960. This massacre took the lives of many people protesting against Apartheid pass laws, including children, and left an indelible mark on history. National Human Rights Day is extremely important to the South African Human Rights Commission, which is mandated by the Constitution to monitor, promote, and protect human rights.
The Republic of South Africa Commemorates Human Rights in the month of March annually under various themes. This year (2023) is going to be commemorated under the theme “Consolidating and sustaining human rights culture into the future”.
During human rights month, the Commission has planned to have a two-day public consultation by conducting door to door on the 28th, and the 29th of March to have exhibition and information sharing session with Oppermansdorp community.
The commemoration is scheduled as follows:
