Media Advisory: SAHRC in the Western Cape to conduct monitoring of Child Youth Care Centre’s in Cape Town

Attention: Editors and Reporters

30 MAY 2022

The Western Cape Provincial Office will today, 30 May 2023 be embarking on monitoring activities in and around Cape Town in accordance with Commissioner Makwetla’s provincial visit and the provincial SHiNE program of action. Section 184 (1) (c) of the South African Constitution states that the South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) must monitor and assess the observance of human rights in the Republic.

The role of monitoring and assessing human rights and potential human rights violations, provides for an opportunity for the Commission to inspect areas of potential violation, and facilitate redress where required. Furthermore, this is in accordance with the observance of Child Protection week and the implementation of the provincial SHiNE program of action. The monitoring will include child youth care centre’s and special needs education facilities.
