Media Invite: SAHRC Mpumalanga Provincial Office to conduct a stakeholder engagement on living conditions as well as rights and responsibilities of farm occupiers and farm owners

    Attention: Editors and Reporters

    19 July 2023

The South African Human Rights Commission (“the Commission”) will be conducting a stakeholder engagement on issues arising out of the farming communities in the Gert Sibande District, as part of its initiatives to address systemic violations in the province.

Section 184 (2)(d) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa read with Section 13(1)(b)(i) of the South African Human Rights Act 40 of 2013 mandates the Commission to develop programs that will educate the public about the observance of human rights, particularly Chapter 2 the Bill of Rights.

The engagement follows several complaints lodged with the Commission arising out of the farming communities within the province in relation to their living conditions, lack of access to basic needs, and allegations of abuse by farm owners. On the other hand, farm owners allege attacks, abuse and unreasonable demands by farm dwellers that often impact farming businesses negatively.

The Commission, therefore, has invited different role players to come together and discuss these issues at length in the interest of all parties concerned. The purpose of the engagement is to find lasting solutions that will allow harmonious cooperation between the parties and hopefully reduce the number of human rights complaints going forward.

The engagement is scheduled to take place as follows:
    Date      : 20 July 2023
    Venue: McBest Guesthouse, Ermelo
    Time     :10:00 to 15:00
